PGA National Ireland Slieve Russell is an 18-hole, par-72 championship parkland course on the Slieve Russell estate near Ballyconnell, County Cavan. The course was created by Irish golf architect Patrick Merrigan and opened in 1992. The resort describes the championship layout as measuring more than 7,000 yards from its back tees; widely published course records give approximately 7,001 yards.
Merrigan routed the holes through the property's drumlin landscape and around natural lakes, with water and changing ground levels central to the design. The championship course is complemented by a separate nine-hole PGA National Academy course and practice facilities including a putting green, practice area and covered driving-range bays. Slieve Russell has hosted two European Tour events, the Irish PGA Championship and a long-running PGA pro-am.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 7,001 yards. Designed by Patrick Merrigan, the course originally opened in 1992. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Full Membership, Clubhouse, Pro shop, Locker rooms, Bar, Showers, Driving range, Practice area, and 6 more.
Patrick Merrigan's championship course was developed as the golf centrepiece of the Slieve Russell estate in County Cavan. The course opened in 1992, with Merrigan using the area's natural lakes and rounded drumlin landforms to establish the routing.
Merrigan worked the course around the existing drumlin terrain and water rather than flattening the site. The resort particularly emphasizes the challenge of the greens and the premium placed on accurate approach play.
The championship course was supplemented by a nine-hole academy course and extensive practice facilities. In May 2019 Slieve Russell received the PGA National Ireland designation after an extended assessment and planning process, becoming part of the PGA's small international group of National-branded venues.
The course has hosted two European Tour events and the Irish PGA Championship. Its annual PGA pro-am dates from 1997. In 2026 it also staged the European Ladies' Team Championship.
PGA National Ireland Slieve Russell operates as the championship golf component of the Slieve Russell Hotel estate. Day visitors and hotel residents can book rounds, and the resort publishes seasonal visitor rates directly.
