Origins

Plettenberg Bay Country Club's own history traces the present golf course to the 1970s, when Fred Hawtree laid out the course in Piesang Valley. It opened in 1977 as Plettenberg Bay was developing into a major Garden Route destination. The club subsequently became part of the town's sporting and social infrastructure.

The club's course dates from 1977 and was laid out by Fred Hawtree.

Design Philosophy

Hawtree's routing uses the site's fynbos, established trees and changes in elevation rather than relying solely on length. The modern club describes natural corridors between holes and a layout that moves through both open ground and indigenous vegetation.

Development

The course has been maintained and developed over decades while retaining the routing associated with Fred Hawtree. The contemporary club now combines golf with tennis and padel and operates a foundation supporting education for staff, caddies and their dependants.

Today

The current course is an 18-hole par-72 layout with five sets of tees and year-round visitor access. The club publishes live course-condition information and operates a pro shop, practice facilities, clubhouse and bar.
