Golf Course Architect
” Hawtree was a prominent British golf course architect active from the mid‑1940s through roughly 1980. He joined his father’s firm in 1938, served as a Royal Artillery officer and Japanese prisoner of war during World War II, and subsequently focused the family firm entirely on golf course design rather than construction.
Over his career he either designed or renovated some 80 courses and worked on as many as 400 across four continents. Notable projects include renovations at Royal Liverpool and Royal Birkdale in England, as well as courses in France (Saint‑Nom‑la‑Bretèche, Fontainebleau, Bondues) and ventures in Belgium, El Salvador, Morocco, South Africa, and others.
In later years he devoted himself to writing on golf architecture and co-founded the British Association of Golf Course Architects.
