About Pontypridd Golf Club

Pontypridd Golf Club is an 18-hole hillside course on Pontypridd Common in South Wales. The club was formed in December 1905 and its original nine holes were open for play by February 1906. Today's course is par 71 from the white and yellow tees and measures 5,951 yards from the whites, rated 69.9 with a slope of 125.

Yellow tees measure 5,706 yards at 68.7/124, while the red course is par 73 at 5,472 yards and 72.8/125. The course sits roughly 400 feet above the town and moves across the Common before descending through wooded ground and climbing back toward the clubhouse. Its history is unusually well documented through contemporary Welsh newspapers, including the club's early financing, a 1908 fundraising rugby match involving touring Wallabies, and the destruction of its nearly completed pavilion by fire in August 1909.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 71, 5,951 yards, course rating 69.9 and slope rating 125. The course originally opened in 1906. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Sports Bar, Members Lounge, Function Room, Changing Rooms, Showers.

Origins

The club was formed in December 1905 after a meeting at Pontypridd's Park Hotel. Prospective ground was inspected by the professional from Radyr and work proceeded rapidly: nine holes were open by February 1906, with Edwin Bradbeer appointed greenkeeper.

Did You Know?
A 1908 rugby match involving members of the touring Australian Wallabies was staged to raise money for the golf club.

Development

Fundraising was a recurring feature of the young club. In October 1908 a scratch rugby side played Pontypridd for the club's benefit, with seven touring Australian players taking part. In August 1909 the newly erected timber-and-zinc pavilion was almost completely destroyed by fire, together with many members' clubs.

It was rebuilt quickly enough for speakers at the March 1910 annual dinner to praise the replacement pavilion. The club later expanded from nine to eighteen holes, although its current history project says the exact date of that expansion remains to be established. The clubhouse was refurbished again in 2021.

Today

The modern course has eighteen holes on the Common, with three rated tee sets and a clubhouse containing a sports bar, members' lounge, function room and changing facilities.
