Origins

The Northern California Golf Association sought its own headquarters and tournament course on the Monterey Peninsula. B. Morse had previously earmarked the 164-acre site for golf, and the land was sold to the NCGA in 1977.

The project was initially conceived as the Hilltop Course before the Poppy Hills name was chosen through an NCGA member contest.

Design Philosophy

Robert Trent Jones Jr. routed the course through the Del Monte Forest's rising terrain. During the later reconstruction, he and the RTJ II team shifted emphasis toward firm playing conditions and the natural forest floor, reducing maintained rough and softening artificial contours.

Development

A major 13-month renovation began in March 2013. The project improved irrigation and drainage, sand-capped playing areas, rebuilt all 18 greens with bentgrass, eliminated rough and reduced irrigated turf by nearly 25 percent. The course reopened April 4, 2014.

Recognition

Poppy Hills' tournament history includes nearly two decades as an AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am co-host. The 2014 renovation was recognised by major golf publications.

Today

Poppy Hills remains owned and operated by the Northern California Golf Association and is open for public play.
