The Strand is Portstewart Golf Club's principal championship links and is distinct from the club's Riverside and Old courses. Willie Park, Jr laid out the original Strand course in the early 1920s. A major later change followed the club's acquisition of additional dune land at Thistly Hollow in 1986, enabling club member Des Giffin to create seven new holes through the larger dunes and establish the modern championship routing.
The course has five rated tee configurations on the club's current ratings table, including Black, Blue and White men's ratings and White and Gold women's ratings. The Black scorecard totals 7,020 yards, although the official ratings table currently gives 7,080 yards, an internal discrepancy that should be checked before storing a single course-level length. Portstewart hosted the 2017 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open on the Strand Course.
The course is an 18-hole links golf course. Designed by Willie Park, Jr, the course originally opened in 1922. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Putting green, Caddies, Buggy hire, Electric trolley hire, Pull trolley hire, Full Membership, Junior Membership.
Portstewart Golf Club was founded in 1894, but the Strand Course developed separately from the club's original course. A new clubhouse was established at Strand Head around 1920 and Willie Park, Jr designed the 18-hole Strand layout, which dates from the early 1920s.
The defining modern change came after the club acquired additional dune land known as Thistly Hollow in 1986. Seven new holes were created there by club member Des Giffin, transforming the Strand into the modern championship routing. The displaced holes later contributed to the development of the Riverside Course, making it important not to merge the histories or scorecards of Portstewart's separate layouts.
The Strand's tournament profile rose substantially with major amateur events and, most visibly, the 2017 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.
The Strand is the club's premium visitor course, with seasonal visitor pricing and defined member-only tee-time blocks. Portstewart also operates the Riverside and Old courses.
