Golf Course Architect
, born 4 February 1864 in Musselburgh, Scotland, was a two‑time Open Championship winner (1887, 1889) who evolved into one of the first full‑time golf course architects. After taking over the family club‑and‑ball making business, he authored one of the earliest golf design books and expanded the firm internationally, including branches in New York.
In turn, he designed and laid out well over 150 courses across Britain, Europe, Canada, and the United States, including Madison Country Club in Connecticut. His designs are marked by strategic routing, bold hazards, and large, contoured greens that reward skillful play.
