Origins

Princeville Makai originated as a 27-hole project on Kauai's North Shore. Robert Trent Jones Jr began studying the property in the late 1960s and the course opened in 1971. It became an important project in his career because it was his first solo golf-course design.

Did You Know?
The original 27-hole Princeville layout was reorganised into the Makai 18 and separate Woods nine during the 2009-10 renovation.

Design Philosophy

The routing uses markedly different environments within the property, moving between ocean cliffs, freshwater lakes and inland woodland. Jones's later renovation retained the fundamental routing while rebuilding playing surfaces and reshaping greens, surrounds and bunkers.

Development

Jones returned in 2009-10 for a comprehensive renovation. Seashore Paspalum was installed on fairways and greens and the former 27-hole arrangement became the Makai 18 plus the Woods nine. In 2024 the Makai Course underwent another $3 million refinement focused on bunkers, drainage, cart paths and turf conditions.

Recognition

Princeville Makai has received the Distinguished Golf Destination designation developed by BoardRoom magazine and Forbes Travel Guide.

Today

The Makai Course remains an 18-hole resort and daily-fee course managed by Troon on Kauai's North Shore.
