About Putaruru Golf Club

Putaruru Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-72 course at 55 Lichfield Road in Putaruru, Waikato. The club's history begins with a few holes marked out in 1920 and a meeting to form a club in 1921. After several moves, the club established its present site in 1938 as a nine-hole course.

It purchased about 90 acres in 1951 and expanded toward 18 holes. In 1954 a course architect identified in the club records only as Mr Babbage of Te Awamutu was commissioned to create a completely new layout played in the reverse direction; the club states that this remains the basis of the course today. Visitors are welcome, with separate rates for golfers affiliated to a New Zealand Golf club and non-affiliated players.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,216 yards, course rating 69.4 and slope rating 122. The course originally opened in 1938. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Golf Carts, Clubhouse, Bar, Putting Green, Chipping Green, Practice Bunker.

Origins

A few holes were first marked out on A. Bent's Overdale Road property in 1920, and a meeting to establish the golf club followed in 1921. F.

The club played on several different nine-hole sites before settling at its current property.

Design Philosophy

After the club acquired enough land for 18 holes, an initial expansion plan by Mr Redmond of Rotorua did not satisfy all members. In 1954 the club brought in a course architect recorded only as Mr Babbage of Te Awamutu, who planned an entirely new routing in the reverse direction. The club states that this is the layout still played today.

Development

The club purchased approximately 90 acres in 1951 and developed a second nine. A clubhouse fire on 11 December 1968 led to a replacement clubhouse that opened in October 1969.

Today

Putaruru operates an 18-hole visitor-friendly club with separate affiliated and non-affiliated green fees.
