About Windross Farm Golf Course

Windross Farm Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-72 course at Ardmore in south Auckland and the present home of the former Manukau Golf Club. Members approved the sale of their Takanini property in 2012 and purchased 60 hectares of former agricultural land near Ardmore Airport for a replacement course. Brett Thomson of RBT Design led the design, with former PGA Tour winner Phil Tataurangi acting as a consultant, and play began on 1 September 2016.

The relatively flat site had only about six metres of natural fall, so imported fill, constructed ridges, burns and several lakes were used to create movement. Around 50,000 indigenous plants were added, and the club describes the resulting landscape as having a links-style character. Golf New Zealand lists the Championship Black course at 6,035 metres, par 72, with a course rating of 71.9 and slope of 131.

The course is an 18-hole links golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,035m, course rating 71.9 and slope rating 131. Designed by Brett Thomson and Phil Tataurangi, the course originally opened in 2016. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Toptracer Range, Practice Greens, Chipping Greens, Practice Bunkers, Golf Shop, Club Fitting, Golf Club Hire, and 5 more.

Origins

Windross Farm represents a relocation rather than the creation of an entirely new club. The organisation traces its roots to two small district clubs formed in 1926, Everslie and Manurewa, whose members combined to establish Manukau Golf Club in 1932. Manukau spent decades at Takanini, but by 2011 the club had accumulated more than NZ$3 million in debt.

A company subsequently offered more than NZ$40 million for the land. In December 2012, 90 percent of members participated in a vote on selling the property and developing a replacement course; 84 percent supported the proposal. The club then purchased approximately 60 hectares of farmland on Alfriston-Ardmore Road, near Ardmore Airport.

Windross Farm opened for member play on 1 September 2016 and secured New Zealand's first LPGA Tour event within weeks.

Design Philosophy

Brett Thomson of RBT Design was appointed to transform a former potato and corn farm, also used for dairy cattle, into the new course. The original ground had only about six metres of fall from east to west, so the design team introduced substantial quantities of fill, constructed undulations and ridges, and created several lakes. Former PGA Tour winner Phil Tataurangi joined Thomson as a consultant.

The club says a nearby sheep-covered hillside influenced the intended visual character. Grass selection was made with year-round closely mown surfaces in mind, while approximately 50,000 indigenous plants, burns and ridges were incorporated to create seasonal texture and a links-style appearance. The routing was also planned as an easy walking course, with the prevailing south-westerly wind an important part of its playing character.

Development

Construction of the clubhouse began in late 2015 and was preceded by a Māori dawn pōwhiri and sacred-rock burial acknowledging the project and site. The golf development included an undercover driving range, multiple practice-green areas, golf shop, cart barn and hospitality facilities. Manukau Golf Club played its final day at Takanini on 31 August 2016 and began play at Windross Farm the following day.

The practice facility has subsequently been upgraded: a new automated Toptracer driving range launched in 2025 with covered bays and five grass target greens. The club's current practice complex also includes three practice-green areas with bunkers, sloping putting surfaces, chipping areas and fairway-like turf.

Recognition

Windross Farm attracted international tournament attention almost immediately after opening. Within weeks, it secured the 2017 McKayson New Zealand Women's Open, the first LPGA Tour tournament held in New Zealand. Severe wind and rain disrupted the final round, forcing the leaders to return on Monday.

Canada's Brooke Henderson eventually won by five strokes at 17-under par, while tournament host Lydia Ko finished tied for 22nd. The event established the new course as a professional championship venue barely a year after it entered play.

Today

Windross Farm remains the home of the relocated Manukau golf community and combines membership with visitor access. The current course has multiple rated tee options and extensive drainage with sand-based greens and surrounds, allowing the club to market it as an all-weather course. Visitors can reserve both nine- and 18-hole rounds, with separate pricing for member guests, New Zealand-affiliated golfers and non-affiliated or international players.

Facilities include the Toptracer range, extensive short-game practice areas, golf shop, equipment hire, carts and clubhouse hospitality.
