The course developed from Richards Bay's early recreational facilities and was later substantially upgraded as the surrounding Mzingazi Golf Estate developed. Peter Matkovich is consistently credited with the major 2007 upgrade, while sources differ on the exact attribution for the earlier course design, so no original designer is asserted here. The club's 2026 published visitor rate is R395 for a standard 18-hole visitor round, with separate junior and senior visitor rates.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. The course originally opened in 1974. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Pro shop, Restaurant, Bar, Tennis, Squash, Swimming pool, Fitness facilities.
Richards Bay Country Club grew out of the town's early sports and recreation facilities. Secondary historical material dates the club to the early 1970s. The golf course developed over time rather than arriving in its current form at once; one detailed South African course history records an initial nine-hole layout followed by expansion to 18 holes in 1987.
The current course occupies the narrow land between Meerensee and Lake Mzingazi. The official club describes strategically placed bunkers and shaped greens within a course where the lake and local wildlife are significant parts of the setting.
The development of Mzingazi Golf Estate led to a substantial modernization of the golf course, including a major Peter Matkovich upgrade and improved irrigation. South African golf references date that work to 2007.
Richards Bay Country Club remains a multi-sport community club. Golfers can book visitor rounds through the club, which publishes current green fees and maintains an on-site pro shop. Tennis, squash, swimming and fitness activities operate alongside golf.
