Golf Course Architect
Peter Matkovich, born in 1942 in Mufulira (then in Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia), began his career as a professional golfer, competing internationally and participating in The Open at Carnoustie (1968) and St Andrews (1970). After moving to South Africa in 1973, he served as club professional and course superintendent at Umhlali Country Club, where his first design work—extending a nine-hole layout to eighteen—marked the start of his architectural career.
Over the following decades he designed and renovated more than 30 courses across Southern Africa and beyond. Notable projects include De Zalze (Western Cape), Arabella, Pinnacle Point, San Lameer, Elements Private Golf Reserve, and international works in Mauritius, Kenya, Namibia, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, and Israel.
” In 2023 his La Réserve Golf Links in Mauritius achieved GEO Certified Development status, and in 2024 he was named Golf Course Designer of the Year at the World Golf Awards.
