About Royal Troon - Old Course

Royal Troon's Old Course is the club's principal championship links on the Ayrshire coast. Royal Troon was founded in 1878 with a small initial layout created with guidance from Prestwick greenkeeper Charlie Hunter. The course expanded rapidly, with George Strath playing a central role in its early development and Willie Fernie later reshaping it substantially.

Fernie's work produced much of the routing recognizable today, including the famous short eighth, 'Postage Stamp', and the demanding 11th beside the railway. James Braid carried out further alterations before Troon staged its first Open Championship in 1923. The Old Course is a par-71 links and has been extended for modern championship play; a commonly published current club configuration is 7,208 yards.

The course is an 18-hole links golf course. It plays to par 71, 7,208 yards. Designed by George Strath and Charlie Hunter, the course originally opened in 1878. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Caddies.

Origins

Golf was recorded at Troon before the club formally came into being, but the decisive step was a meeting in 1878 to establish a golf club. Charles Hunter of neighbouring Prestwick advised on turning scrub and gorse-covered ground into the first small course. George Strath, the club's first professional, was instrumental as the course expanded.

Design Philosophy

The Old Course evolved rather than being created in a single design campaign. Willie Fernie's alterations around the turn of the twentieth century established much of its modern identity, including short strategic holes and the railway-side stretch. James Braid subsequently strengthened bunkering and championship demands.

Development

The early course expanded from a handful of holes to 12 and then 18. Fernie undertook major work in the early twentieth century, and Braid remodelled the course before its first Open Championship in 1923. Later adjustments have allowed the course to continue serving as an Open venue.

Recognition

Royal Troon's Old Course is part of The Open rota and has hosted many editions of the championship, including the 2024 Open.

Today

Royal Troon remains a private members' club that permits visitor play on designated days during its visitor season. Its Old Course remains the principal championship layout.
