Samoset Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-70 resort course in Rockport, Maine, playing along the Atlantic coastline of Penobscot Bay. Originally built as a nine-hole course in 1902, it was rebuilt and expanded to 18 holes by architect Robert Elder in 1974, with further renovations by Geoffrey Cornish in the early 1990s (holes 10, 11 and 18) and Bradley Booth in 2000 (holes 4, 5, 14 and 18, plus a new practice area). From the longest tees the course plays 6,548 yards to a rating of 70.1 and slope of 132.
Fourteen of the 18 holes offer Atlantic Ocean views, including the par-5 4th along a coastal seawall and the par-4 18th, regarded as one of the more demanding finishing holes in New England. The course is part of the Samoset Resort and prioritises tee times for resort guests, with the general public able to book starting two days in advance.
The course is an 18-hole resort golf course. It plays to par 70, 6,548 yards, course rating 70.1 and slope rating 132. Designed by Robert Elder, the course originally opened in 1902. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Terrace, Function Room, Lodge, Suite.
Golf at Samoset traces back to 1902, when a nine-hole course was first laid out on the site overlooking Penobscot Bay in Rockport. The course stayed at nine holes for decades before architect Robert Elder rebuilt and expanded it to a full 18 in 1974, establishing most of the routing the course still plays today.
The course has been refined in stages since Elder's rebuild rather than redesigned wholesale. In the early 1990s, Geoffrey Cornish reworked several holes, including the 10th, 11th and 18th. In 2000, Bradley Booth redesigned and rebuilt holes 4, 5, 14 and 18 and added a new practice area, including turning the 18th into more of a risk-reward closing hole.
Now part of the Samoset Resort, the course plays 6,548 yards to a par of 70 from its longest tees, with the par-5 4th running along a coastal seawall and the par-4 18th regarded as one of the more demanding finishing holes in New England.
