Golf Course Architect
Geoffrey St John Cornish (1914–2012) was a highly influential golf course architect known for designing over 200 courses across New England, North America, and Europe. A trained agronomist, he began under Stanley Thompson in the 1930s and launched his own practice in Massachusetts in 1952.
He served as president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects in 1975–76 and was a respected historian and author, co‑writing landmark books on golf course architecture. Cornish’s design philosophy emphasized economical, playable, and maintenance‑friendly public courses that blended naturally with the land.
He favored routing that preserved terrain rather than extensive earth‑moving, making golf accessible to wider communities. As an educator and mentor, he shaped generations of golfers and designers, earning him the informal title “Dean” among peers.
