Sand Golf Club is an 18-hole course near Bankeryd, outside Jönköping in Småland, Sweden. It opened in 2005 on the site of a former potato farm, after the American design firm Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates was brought in to build a links-style course on the property's naturally sandy soil. It is marketed as Småland's only true links course, with open fairways, few trees, and rolling, dune-like terrain built to international USGA construction standards.
The course plays to a par of 72 from five tee markers (46, 52, 57, 63 and 67, referring to approximate length in hundreds of metres), ranging from 4,469 metres for the forward tees to 6,562 metres from the back markers, with course and slope ratings recorded separately for men and women on each of the shared tee markers. In 2007 Golf Digest listed it 82nd among the world's greatest courses, and it has since been ranked 15th in Sweden by Svensk Golf; it was also among the nominees for the World Golf Awards' Sweden's Best Golf Course in 2026.
The course is an 18-hole links golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,562m (7,176 yards), course rating 75.7 and slope rating 144. Designed by Arthur Hills and Steve Forrest, the course originally opened in 2005. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Hotel, Restaurant, Function Room, Golf Cart Rental, Pro Shop, Golf Lessons, TopTracer Technology, Driving Range, and 3 more.
A links course needs sandy soil, and that is what a group of local entrepreneurs found on a stretch of farmland outside Jönköping: a potato field sitting on a bed of pure sand, unusual for an inland site in Sweden. In 2003 they brought in Arthur Hills and Steve Forrest, the American design partnership responsible for more than 200 courses worldwide, to see whether the ground could support a links-style layout despite being nowhere near open water. Hills and Forrest concluded it could, and construction proceeded to what the club describes as international USGA standard.
The course opened in 2005.
Hills and Forrest used the site's free-draining sand base to build the open, treeless fairways and rolling ground typical of a seaside links, rather than the tree-lined parkland style more common across Scandinavian golf. Five separate tee markers, labelled 46 through 67 for their approximate length in hundreds of metres, let the same 18 holes play anywhere from roughly 4,500 to 6,600 metres, so the routing is not simply shortened for shorter hitters but genuinely rescaled tee by tee.
Sand Golf Club is structured around a shareholder model rather than conventional club membership: buying a share makes a golfer a part-owner of the course, the clubhouse, the hotel and the land itself, alongside a menu of more conventional annual memberships (Guld, Sandmedlem, Fairwaymedlem and several junior tiers) sold through the Sweetspot booking platform. Around the course, the club has built out a full resort operation -- a 30-room hotel plus separate lodge buildings, the Bistro Sand restaurant, conference space, a gym and an outdoor hot tub -- aimed as much at golf-and-stay packages and corporate events as at member play.
The course drew early outside attention: Golf Digest placed it 82nd on its world rankings in 2007, only two years after opening. It is listed 15th among Swedish courses by Svensk Golf, the Swedish Golf Federation's magazine, and was named among the nominees for the World Golf Awards' Sweden's Best Golf Course in 2026.
Today Sand functions as a golf resort serving the Jönköping area, combining pay-and-play greenfee access with hotel packages, a business-golf program (Sand Business Club) and an events calendar, rather than operating as a closed members' club.
