Sandgate Golf Club is a nine-hole community golf course at Allpass Parade in Shorncliffe, about 16 kilometres from Brisbane's CBD. The club was established in 1921 and developed its course on 57 acres of low-lying land, much of which was originally saltwater and mangrove swamp. The first six holes occupied the higher ground; flood gates then allowed another three holes to be constructed on reclaimed ground.
The present course plays to par 36 for nine holes and is generally classified as parkland, with an 18-hole round created by playing the nine-hole property twice. Sandgate actively accepts public social golf, with different availability around club competitions. Current published social rates are A$30 for nine holes and A$40 for 18 holes.
The course is a 9-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 36, 2,768m. The course originally opened in 1921. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Pro Shop, Putting Green, Chipping Green, Practice Bunker, Golf Lessons, Golf Cart Hire, Club Hire.
In 1921 a nine-man foundation committee set out to convert 57 acres at Shorncliffe into a golf course. Much of the property was saltwater and mangrove swamp. The higher land was cleared first and six holes became playable.
Flood gates were subsequently used to exclude seawater from the lower area, allowing three more holes with sand greens to be constructed. Contemporary local-history material records the formal opening of the nine-hole course on 25 November 1922.
The original sand greens were progressively replaced by grass greens. The club continued filling low areas over succeeding decades, including a major project in the early 1960s when the Harbours and Marine Department pumped about 16,000 cubic yards of fill onto the property. The first clubhouse was a canvas marquee; a permanent clubhouse followed in 1923 and parts of that structure survived subsequent additions and alterations.
Sandgate remains a nine-hole community club with public social golf available around competition times. Its own website describes it as one of Queensland's oldest nine-hole golf courses.
