About Saunton Golf Club - West Course

Saunton Golf Club's West Course is the second of the club's two links layouts on Braunton Burrows, England's largest sand dune system and a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. Built by Herbert Fowler in 1935 and substantially reworked by Frank Pennink in 1974, it is regularly ranked among the top 100 courses in the UK and Ireland. Visitor play is welcomed by prior arrangement outside member tee times, with green fees varying by season.

The shared clubhouse has a restaurant and bar, and practice facilities include putting greens, a short-game area, a covered range, and a long practice ground.

The course is an 18-hole links golf course. Designed by Herbert Fowler, the course originally opened in 1935. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Practice Ground, Full Membership, Social Membership, Junior Membership, Country Membership, Restaurant, Bar, Covered Driving Range, and 2 more.

Origins

Rising membership at Saunton in the years after the First World War led the club to commission Herbert Fowler — architect of the original East Course — for a second eighteen holes on the Braunton Burrows dune system. The West Course opened in 1935, giving the club 36 holes across the same duneland.

Did You Know?
The course's greens were relaid again in 1987-88, following Frank Pennink's 1974 redesign.

Development

Like the East Course, the West Course was swept up in the military requisition of the site from 1939, with the grounds used for D-Day training and tank storage during the Second World War. It was substantially reworked afterward by architect Frank Pennink, reopening in its remodelled form in 1974, and its greens were relaid again in 1987-88.

Recognition

The West Course is ranked among the top 100 courses in the UK and Ireland, and in 2024 joined the East Course in hosting the R&A's Women's and Men's Senior Amateur Championships.

Today

Saunton's West Course remains part of a members' club that welcomes visiting golfers by prior arrangement, sharing the East Course's clubhouse and Braunton Burrows dune setting.
