John Jacob Frank Pennink (1913–1983), born in Delft, Netherlands, was a distinguished British amateur golfer who twice won the English Amateur Championship (1937, 1938), played on the victorious 1938 Walker Cup team, served as a Royal Air Force squadron leader during WWII, and later became a respected golf journalist. , becoming its most active designer and shaping courses across Britain, continental Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Pennink was known for economical yet strategic designs featuring simple, effective greens, plateau greens with steep run‑offs, limited fairway bunkering, and often a solitary tree in the fairway. His work includes the redesign of Saunton Golf Club’s West Course in the 1970s and notable originals like Vilamoura Old (Portugal), Noordwijk (Netherlands), Olgiata (Italy) and Palmares (Portugal).
He also served as president of the English Golf Union and as a long‑time Walker Cup selector.
