Origins

Shangri-La developed the course as the golf component of its Hambantota resort on Sri Lanka's southern coast. The site included a coconut plantation, coastal dunes and an abandoned sapphire mine, giving designer Rodney Wright several distinct landscapes to incorporate into a single routing.

Design Philosophy

The resort divides Wright's design into three principal landscape zones. The coconut plantation uses established palms as part of the setting; the Sapphire Mine section incorporates water and the former mining landscape; and the Dune Area introduces elevation changes and views toward the Indian Ocean. The resort says the development also included rehabilitation of the abandoned mine, vegetation restoration, birdlife reintroduction and use of salt-tolerant Paspalum turf.

Today

The course is an 18-hole, par-70 resort layout with three tee decks per hole. Caddies are mandatory according to the resort's published facilities information. The golf operation includes a clubhouse, pro shop, putting green, equipment rental, locker rooms, bag storage, carts and a practice net; the driving range is currently listed as closed.
