Shenzhen Golf Club is a 27-hole private members' club on Shennan Road in Futian District, now surrounded by the dense urban development of central Shenzhen. Japanese professional Isao Aoki designed the original course, which opened in 1985. Nelson & Haworth were commissioned in 1997 to redesign the entire layout, and the reconstructed course reopened in 2000.
Their published project data lists three nine-hole circuits measuring 3,542, 3,532 and 3,637 yards, for a combined 10,711 yards. The redesign focused on stronger playing conditions, drainage and surfaces while working with the mature trees that had developed since the original course was built. Shenzhen Golf Club has also staged professional tournament golf, including the 2005 Volvo China Open.
The course is a 27-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 108, 9,794m (10,711 yards). Designed by Isao Aoki, the course originally opened in 1985. It is a private members-only club.
The club dates from the early period of modern golf development in mainland China. Nelson & Haworth's project history credits Japanese professional Isao Aoki with the original design and dates its opening to 1985. The site, which was comparatively undeveloped when golf first arrived there, subsequently became enclosed by the rapid expansion of Shenzhen.
When Nelson & Haworth were commissioned in 1997, their objective was not simply to alter individual holes but to improve the complete 27-hole course. Their project account says the redesign was intended to make the golf challenging and playable while improving visual character, playing surfaces and drainage. Mature trees that had developed on the property became an important part of the reconstructed routing and presentation.
Nelson & Haworth began their redesign work after being appointed in 1997. The reconstruction was completed in 2000, when the revised course opened with an international Ryder Cup-style match between a Chinese team and players representing the Rest of the World. The architects list the three nine-hole circuits at 3,542, 3,532 and 3,637 yards.
Its central Shenzhen setting and early place in China's modern golf history have made the club notable beyond tournament results. The course later hosted the 2005 Volvo China Open.
The club remains on Shennan Road in Futian District. Shenzhen government information identifies it as a members-only golf facility.
