Golf Course Architect
-based golf course architect who launched his design career in the early 1970s. After graduating in environmental design from the University of California at Berkeley, he worked under Robert Muir Graves and Ron Fream, before establishing his own practice in the 1990s and later co‑founding Nelson & Haworth with Neil Haworth and Brett Mogg.
He became a Regular Member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects in 1987 and was named Golf Course Architect of the Year by Boardroom Magazine in 2000. He designed over a hundred courses across six continents, notably in Hawaii, Southeast Asia, China and Australia.
Among his best‑known works are Mauna Lani in Hawaii, Bali Golf & Country Club in Indonesia, Sheshan International in China, and Macquarie Links International Golf Club in Australia. His design philosophy emphasized letting the site speak for itself, combining natural presentation with fairness, variety, and strategic challenge.
He passed away in San Francisco on November 19, 2012, after battling ALS.
