About South Herts Golf Club - Vardon Course

The Vardon Course is the principal 18-hole course at South Herts Golf Club in Totteridge, North London. South Herts was founded in 1899, and the club credits two-time Open champion Willie Park Junior with the original design. Harry Vardon then spent 35 years as the club's professional and head greenkeeper and made numerous improvements to the course; James Braid advised on bunkering during the 1930s, while former Ryder Cup player Ken Brown has been consulted on more recent development.

The current White course measures 6,435 yards and plays to par 72, with a Yellow course of 6,140 yards and a Red women's course of 5,747 yards and par 74. The Vardon has been selected by The R&A for Open Regional Qualifying on 14 occasions. South Herts is a members' club but currently welcomes visitors on weekdays.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,435 yards. Designed by Willie Park, Jr, the course originally opened in 1899. Origins

South Herts was founded in 1899 by members and committee figures associated with Muswell Hill Golf Club. Willie Park Junior was responsible for the original design of the main course.

Did You Know?
Harry Vardon spent 35 years as South Herts' professional and head greenkeeper.

Design Philosophy

Park established the underlying parkland routing, but the course evolved substantially rather than remaining frozen in its original form. Harry Vardon's long tenure as professional and head greenkeeper allowed him to make repeated improvements over several decades.

Development

James Braid advised on bunkering during the 1930s. In a much later period, former Ryder Cup player and broadcaster Ken Brown was consulted on further course development. The club also established the separate nine-hole Rees Course.

Recognition

The Vardon Course has been selected by The R&A as an Open Regional Qualifying venue on 14 occasions.

Today

South Herts remains a members' club with two courses. Weekday visitors are currently welcomed on the 18-hole Vardon Course.
