The course uses the sandy, rolling Sandhills terrain rather than imposing a heavily manufactured routing. Its architectural identity is based on width, angles into greens and putting surfaces that reward approaches from preferred sides of the fairway.
Kyle Franz led an 18-month restoration culminating in the course's 2021 reopening. Work included substantial tree removal, reconstruction of bunkers, irrigation improvements, widening fairways and removing maintained rough around greens. Southern Pines operates alongside Pine Needles and Mid Pines under the Ross Resorts umbrella. Its historic routing remains the central attraction, supplemented by Franz's Lost Hole and the Overhills 18-hole putting course.
