About Springfield Golf Course

Springfield Golf Club is an 18-hole course at 150 Devon Street West in Rotorua, Bay of Plenty. The club was formed on 13 November 1947 after local golfers identified the need for a second 18-hole course near Rotorua. The club has hosted the NZGA Men's Amateur Championship, New Zealand Junior Boys, New Zealand Maori Tournament, New Zealand Ladies Amateur and the Tower Inter-provincials.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 70, 5,580m, course rating 69.1 and slope rating 114. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Pro Shop, Golf Cart Rental, Club Hire, Trundler Hire, Clubhouse, Bar.

Origins

By the late 1930s Rotorua golfers were seeking a second 18-hole course to supplement the nine-hole course at Government Gardens. On 13 November 1947 a meeting formally established Springfield Golf Club. After seven months of negotiations a suitable lease was secured.

Volunteers then began the long process of turning swampy, scrub-covered farmland into the course.

Did You Know?
The original site was described by the club as swampy and covered in barberry, gorse, broom and old farm fencing.

Design Philosophy

The course was laid out gradually by club volunteers rather than being attributed to a named professional architect. Its current routing remains on the land developed during those early years.

Development

A new $50,000 clubhouse opened in 1967. In 1973 the club installed automatic irrigation around each green. The club has continued to operate and maintain the original Springfield property rather than relocating to a new course.

Recognition

Springfield has staged multiple national and inter-provincial events across men's, women's, junior and Maori golf.

Today

Springfield remains an 18-hole Rotorua club with public visitor rates, online tee-time booking, cart and equipment hire and a clubhouse operation.
