St Anne

Origins

North Bull Island itself was created through nineteenth-century engineering works in Dublin Bay, and golf arrived on the island with Royal Dublin in 1889. St. Anne's traces its own beginning to 1921, when Marmaduke Devitt, Tussy Murray and Dudley Stuart created a modest nine-hole course.

A clubhouse followed in 1925. The club therefore developed on a comparatively young coastal landform rather than on an ancient natural island.

Design Philosophy

The modern course is a traditional links in a coastal nature reserve. Its official hole guides show a mixture of wind-exposed holes, raised and bunkered greens, out-of-bounds boundaries and holes where positioning is more important than simple length. The club publishes individual strategic guidance for all 18 holes rather than presenting the layout as a uniform test.

Development

The defining development came in 1989 when St. Anne's reached 18 holes. A further major infrastructure change occurred in 2003 with the opening of the present clubhouse overlooking Dublin Bay.

Those changes transformed a club founded around a small nine-hole layout into the full links operation that exists today.

Recognition

Tourism Ireland and Discover Ireland identify St. Anne's as an 18-hole par-71 links on Bull Island, while the club emphasizes the unusual setting of a links course within a protected island landscape only a short distance from Dublin city centre.

Today

St. Anne's operates as an 18-hole visitor-accessible links with a published online booking system and 2026 visitor rates. The club maintains restaurant, bar, professional-shop and practice facilities alongside the course.
