Origins

The golf course grew out of a site whose history long predates the game itself. English immigrant William Dart established farming interests on the Brisbane River flats in the nineteenth century and built the Hillstone homestead for his family in 1886. Four decades later the surrounding land took on a new role.

In 1926, land around Sandy Creek was declared a bird sanctuary and subdivided into a 123-acre golf property for Indooroopilly Golf Club. Dart's former Hillstone residence became the club's first clubhouse. The course dates its establishment to 1926, making 2026 its centenary year.

Design Philosophy

The most significant documented architectural connection is Alister MacKenzie, although the extent of his involvement is often overstated in secondary descriptions. The official history says that while MacKenzie was in Australia in 1926, Indooroopilly Golf Club sought his expertise and he provided recommendations on the course layout. The club's current description similarly says its owners sought MacKenzie's input to enhance the layout.

That supports a genuine MacKenzie influence but not an attribution of the entire course design to him. The present course occupies rolling inland ground crossed by Sandy Creek, with tree-lined holes and sections beside the Brisbane River. Its modern configuration is 5,411 metres and par 69.

Development

For roughly six decades the St Lucia property served as the home of Indooroopilly Golf Club. During the 1980s the club relocated to its Long Pocket property, ending the site's period as a conventional private members' club. The venue's own historical timeline says the site became St Lucia Golf Links, a public golf course, in 1987, while independent reporting places Brisbane City Council's assumption of stewardship around 1985.

Jens Holland and Hans Pettersson became involved in operating the clubhouse and hospitality business during this transition. From the late 1980s onward the former clubhouse was progressively expanded and refurbished. Later additions included an enlarged function complex, Hundred Acre Bar, a new Golf Shop, golf simulator and, in 2019, a 12-hole mini-golf course.

In 2017 the Holland and Pettersson operation gained management rights relating to St Lucia Golf Links and began further investment in its golf facilities in cooperation with Brisbane City Council.

Recognition

St Lucia has a significant place in Brisbane golf because it survives as one of the city's older courses while remaining accessible without club membership. The venue states that it has hosted several Queensland Open and PGA tournaments. Reporting for its 2026 centenary also identifies it as the sixth golf course established in Brisbane and one of the city's earliest surviving golf courses.

Its historical interest is strengthened by the documented involvement of Alister MacKenzie during the formative period of the original Indooroopilly Golf Club layout.

Today

St Lucia Golf Links now operates as a pay-and-play public course rather than a members' club. Brisbane City Council owns the golf course, while the wider Hillstone operation manages significant golf, hospitality and event facilities associated with the property. The course is open year-round and offers both nine- and 18-hole play.

Golfers have access to a Golf Shop, motorised carts, club hire, PGA-led coaching, club fitting and a simulator. Hundred Acre Kitchen Bar occupies the clubhouse precinct, while Hillstone St Lucia operates the property's event spaces. The venue marked 100 years of golf in 2026.
