Golf Course Architect
Alister MacKenzie (born 30 August 1870 in Normanton, Yorkshire; died 6 January 1934 in Santa Cruz, California) began his career as a surgeon before transitioning after World War I into golf course design, co‑founding the London firm Colt, MacKenzie & Alison in 1919. Over his career he designed or consulted on approximately 50–65 courses across four continents, including world-renowned layouts such as Augusta National, Cypress Point, Royal Melbourne, Pasatiempo, Lahinch, and Sharp Park.
His design philosophy—refined in his 1920 book Golf Architecture—emphasised naturalism, strategic bunkering, undulating turf, and player‑friendly options, deeply influenced by his camouflage experience in wartime. His legacy endures as one of golf’s most celebrated architects of the Golden Age.
