Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club is a traditional 18-hole links on the Firth of Clyde at Prestwick, South Ayrshire. The club was founded on 3 November 1851 as the Prestwick Mechanics Club, with Old Tom Morris playing a central role in its formation. It adopted the St Nicholas name in 1858.
The present course measures 6,044 yards and plays to par 69, with running fairways, bunkers, undulating greens and gorse typical of exposed coastal links golf. The club traces its origins to golfers who were outside the newly formed Prestwick Golf Club, and for its first 26 years the two organisations shared the same 12-hole Prestwick Links. Old Tom Morris was a founder and honorary member and won three of his four Open Championships while a St Nicholas member.
The course is an 18-hole links golf course. It plays to par 69, 5,527m (6,044 yards). Designed by Old Tom Morris, the course originally opened in 1851. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse.
On 3 November 1851, Tom Morris and a group of artisan golfers met at the Red Lion in Prestwick to establish the Prestwick Mechanics Club. Morris had recognised demand among golfers who were not members of the recently founded Prestwick Golf Club. The organisation changed its name to Prestwick St Nicholas in 1858.
For the first 26 years, St Nicholas and Prestwick Golf Club shared the same 12-hole Prestwick Links. The club subsequently established its own identity and course while retaining its connection to the earliest period of organised golf in Prestwick.
The club identifies itself as the 26th-oldest golf club in the world. Its connection with Old Tom Morris and the earliest Open Championships forms a significant part of its historical importance.
