About Stackstown Golf Club

Stackstown Golf Club is a parkland club on the slopes of the Dublin Mountains at Rathfarnham. It began in 1976 as a nine-hole course created largely through volunteer work by members of a club originally founded for An Garda Síochána. The standard course is par 72; published white-tee data gives 6,424 yards, a 71.9 course rating and slope of 129. Stackstown is closely associated with three-time major champion Pádraig Harrington, who grew up as a member and turned professional in 1995. Six greens and tee boxes were redeveloped before Harrington formally opened that work in 2006.

Origins

Stackstown was founded as a golf club for members of An Garda Síochána. Volunteers led by first captain Denis Devine, with assistance from others including Paddy Harrington, created the original nine-hole course, which opened in 1976. Non-Garda membership began the following year.

Development

The course became an 18-hole layout in 1979. Its clubhouse was officially opened by Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald in 1983. Two further holes were added in 1999, producing the unusual 20-hole physical layout.

Six greens and associated teeing grounds were subsequently redeveloped, with Pádraig Harrington officially opening the work in 2006.

Recognition

Stackstown is particularly associated with Pádraig Harrington, who developed at the club before turning professional in 1995. The club also records national and provincial team successes across its men's and women's sections.

Today

Stackstown remains an 18-hole playing course with two additional holes available within the property. Visitors can pre-book, and practice facilities include a range, putting green and chipping green.
