Stonehaven Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-66 coastal course at Cowie in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire. The club was founded on 13 April 1888; its present course and clubhouse site opened on 7 July 1897. The White men's course measures 5,103 yards, with secondary WHS data listing a 65.6 rating and 115 slope.
The layout occupies elevated ground overlooking the North Sea, Stonehaven Bay and the town, and crosses the Highland Fault Line. James Braid and Archie Simpson played a challenge match at Stonehaven in 1906 and subsequently planned improvements to the course. The club also preserves an unusual wartime feature: a bomb crater created by a German aircraft in August 1940 remains between the first and second fairways and is known locally as 'Hitler's Bunker.'
The course is an 18-hole links golf course. It plays to par 66, 5,103 yards, course rating 65.6 and slope rating 115. The course originally opened in 1888. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Restaurant, Club Hire, Pull Trolley Hire, Electric Trolley Hire.
Organized golf in Stonehaven began with the club's foundation on Friday, 13 April 1888. A first clubhouse followed in June 1889. The early course had ten holes, was reduced to nine a year later, and the present course and clubhouse site was opened on 7 July 1897.
The course uses its elevated coastal ground and pronounced natural features rather than length as its principal defence. The Highland Fault Line cuts through the property, with the gap known as The Gully affecting play around the 13th and 15th holes.
James Braid played a challenge match at Stonehaven against Archie Simpson on 18 August 1906. After the match, Braid and Simpson planned improvements to the course. George Duncan, later the 1920 Open champion and 1929 Ryder Cup captain, also served briefly as the club professional.
The course's geological setting, views across Stonehaven Bay and its connections with Braid, Simpson and Duncan form important parts of the club's historical identity.
Stonehaven remains an 18-hole visitor-accessible club with a par-66 White course of 5,103 yards. The club publishes seasonal visitor rates and operates online booking through BRS.
