Swope Memorial Golf Course

Origins

The land came from Thomas Swope, a Kansas City real-estate investor who donated more than 1,300 acres to the city in 1896 to create what became Swope Park. Golf arrived early: a nine-hole layout by James Dalgleish opened in the park in 1906, and by 1915 the city had built out an 18-hole course on the site, making it Kansas City's first public golf course.

Design Philosophy

W. Tillinghast to rebuild the course. Tillinghast was near the end of his design career -- he was working on Bethpage Black around the same period -- and applied the same instincts for elevated, well-defended greens and shot-making variety to Swope's hilly ground.

Golf historian Ron Whitten, who advised the recent restoration, has noted the difficulty of reading Tillinghast's intentions on a piece of land he treated as its own problem to solve rather than applying a formula.

Development

For decades the course was split by segregation: the 18-hole layout (Course No. 1) was reserved for white golfers, while Black golfers were limited to a nine-hole Course No. 2.

That changed on March 24, 1950, when four Black golfers deliberately played Course No. 1, facing hostility and vandalism but establishing access that preceded the broader civil rights movement by years. A 1990s renovation later stripped away much of Tillinghast's original character -- shrinking greens and adding awkward cart-path routing -- and the course fell into decline over the following decades.

Starting in January 2025, Kansas City Parks & Recreation closed the course for a roughly $7 million, 15-month restoration directed by Todd Clark and Brent Hugo of CE Golf Design with Ron Whitten as historical consultant. The project rebuilt greens using Better Billy Bunker construction, removed more than 120 trees, replaced the irrigation system, added a new pond, and reworked the third hole's routing to fix a pace-of-play bottleneck while otherwise restoring Tillinghast's green sites, bunkering and tee boxes. The course reopened to the public in July 2026.

Recognition

Swope hosted the 1949 Kansas City Open Invitational, the only PGA Tour event ever played on a Kansas City public course, won by Jim Ferrier over a field that included Ben Hogan and Sam Snead. It later hosted the United Golf Association's 1953 national championship -- the leading competition for Black golfers barred from the PGA -- and the 2005 USGA Women's Amateur Public Links Championship. Following the restoration, it is described as the only public Tillinghast course in the country that retains all of its original holes and routing.

Today

Swope Memorial operates as a Kansas City Parks & Recreation municipal course, managed day to day by Orion Golf. Since reopening in July 2026, it has been positioned by the city as the flagship of its public golf investment, pairing restored Tillinghast-era architecture with modern conditioning while keeping green fees accessible to the public.
