Golf Course Architect
Albert Warren “Tillie” Tillinghast (1876–1942) was a prolific American golf course architect known for his richly contoured, strategic designs and deep bunkers—a central figure in the Golden Age of golf design. Born and raised in Philadelphia, he emerged as a self-taught architect whose work showcased originality rather than formulaic templates; he favored unique holes with risk‑reward choices, undulating greens, and bold shaping.
He was part of the influential “Philadelphia School” of design alongside contemporaries like George Thomas, Hugh Wilson, George Crump, and William Fownes. His career encompassed more than 250 courses, several of which hosted major championships, and he was posthumously inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2015.
