About The Chandigarh Golf Club

The Chandigarh Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-72 course in Sector 6, Chandigarh. The club originated in 1962 after the Punjab Government allotted land for golf in the newly planned city. Its earliest course consisted of nine tees and eight greens laid out by H.

S. Malik and Mr. Goswami of Delhi Golf Club, with additional holes added as membership grew.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,373m (6,970 yards). Designed by H. S. Malik and Peter Thomson, the course originally opened in 1962. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. Origins

The club's own heritage account traces the idea to the late 1950s, when Jawaharlal Nehru reportedly questioned why the newly planned city of Chandigarh did not have its own golf course. In 1962 the Punjab Government under Chief Minister Pratap Singh Kairon allotted land, and a group including P. N.

Thapar, H. S. Brar, Anthony Leocadia Fletcher and others organised the early club.

H. S. Malik and Mr.

Goswami of Delhi Golf Club laid out an initial nine tees and eight greens.

Design Philosophy

Peter Thomson's late-1970s plan provided the framework for the eventual 18-hole course across land that had included a rocky riverbed. Later consultants and architects have focused more on refinement than wholesale replacement of that routing, improving bunkering, tees, turf, drainage and green complexes while dealing with the intense amount of play the course receives.

Development

The club was formally registered as a society on 25 August 1966 and gained its clubhouse in 1969. By 1977-78 growing membership required a true 18-hole course. Additional land was secured, Thomson produced a plan, and development proceeded with assistance from club officials and Army machinery.

The complete 18-hole vision evolved through the early 1980s and was described by the club as substantially completed by 1985. David Hemstock was later engaged for a multi-year improvement programme, while Golf Design India has reconstructed selected greens.

Recognition

Chandigarh has produced an unusually strong group of competitive golfers. Jeev Milkha Singh is closely associated with the club, while later professionals including Shubhankar Sharma and Gaganjeet Bhullar have also been linked to it.

Today

The club remains member-based but permits visitor green-fee play. The official scorecard lists four tee distances, nine holes are floodlit, and the practice range extends to 250 yards with 12 bays and night lighting.
