The course formerly known as The Duke's, St Andrews is now the Craigtoun Course and has been operated by St Andrews Links Trust since the beginning of 2026. The inland course opened in 1995 and was originally designed by five-time Open champion Peter Thomson with Ross Perrett. Unlike the coastal links courses in central St Andrews, Craigtoun occupies elevated heathland and parkland roughly three miles inland.
Tim Liddy carried out a major redesign in 2006, adding five new holes, creating three new green complexes, renovating more than 100 bunkers and adding almost 400 yards. The redesign introduced pronounced bunker forms influenced by Australian Sandbelt architecture. The course has 18 holes and is currently presented as a par-71 layout.
The course is an 18-hole heathland golf course. Designed by Ross Perrett and Peter Thomson, the course originally opened in 1995. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Restaurant, Bar, Clubhouse, Pro shop, Golf buggy hire, Club hire.
The course was created in the 1990s as an inland alternative to the famous links of St Andrews. Peter Thomson and Ross Perrett designed the original layout, which opened in 1995 as The Duke's Course and became closely associated with the Old Course Hotel.
The original routing used elevated heathland and parkland rather than coastal links. This distinction remains fundamental to the course: mature pines, natural undulations and inland ground create a different style of golf from the town's seaside courses.
Tim Liddy undertook a major reconstruction in 2006. The project added five new holes and three new green complexes, renovated more than 100 bunkers and lengthened the course by nearly 400 yards. The bunker work introduced visual references to Australia's Sandbelt courses.
The course has long been recognised as the principal inland course associated with St Andrews. Its acquisition by the St Andrews Links Trust significantly changed its institutional status.
At the beginning of 2026 St Andrews Links Trust took over a long-term lease, renamed the course Craigtoun and incorporated it as the eighth course in its portfolio. The Duke's name is therefore historical rather than the current operating name.
