Origins

Springfield's public golf scene predates most of the courses that came after it, and The Oaks is one of the reasons why. Built in 1926, it ranks among the first golf courses established in the Springfield area, laid out along Sugar Creek on rolling, tree-lined ground that has matured into the course's defining character. Its age places it alongside central Illinois's earliest municipal and daily-fee layouts, from an era when golf was expanding beyond private country clubs into courses built for everyday public play.

Development

The course operated for decades before being purchased in early 2019 by the family ownership group that also owns Meadowview Golf Course in Mattoon and Timberlake Golf Course in Sullivan, and manages Lakeshore Golf Course in Taylorville. The new owners carried out renovations to both the clubhouse and the course, and folded The Oaks into a shared membership structure giving golfers access to all four properties.

Today

Today The Oaks remains a public, daily-fee course playing to a par of 70 across four tee options, from 4,342 to 6,130 yards. Alongside the round itself, the club offers a driving range, chipping and putting greens, golf lessons and club fitting, a restaurant and bar, and banquet space used for outings and events.
