The Quest Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-72 public golf course in Houghton Lake, Michigan. Built in 1994, the club's official history credits PGA Tour professional Ken Green with its design, while Golf Association of Michigan material and several golf directories also associate architect John Sanford Jr. with the project.
The championship setup measures 6,765 yards with a 73.1 course rating and 136 slope. Other rated combinations range down to 4,936 yards, allowing the course to accommodate a broad range of players. The layout occupies rolling terrain near Houghton Lake; the Golf Association of Michigan describes the front nine as comparatively open with fairway bunkering and mounds, while the back nine is more heavily tree-lined.

The Quest emerged during the expansion of northern Michigan's destination and public-golf market in the 1990s. Construction produced an 18-hole course on rolling ground just south of Houghton Lake, and the course began play in 1994. The club's own account credits PGA Tour professional Ken Green as its designer.
Independent course directories and Michigan Links records also name golf architect John Sanford Jr. alongside Green, although the current club website does not explain how the design responsibilities were divided. From the outset, The Quest was built as a full-length public course rather than a private residential club, with multiple tee positions intended to accommodate golfers of different abilities.
The routing makes use of the site's changing character rather than repeating one style of hole throughout the round. The Golf Association of Michigan describes the front nine as more open, with fairway bunkers and mounding providing much of its definition, while the back nine moves through more heavily tree-lined ground where accuracy becomes increasingly important. Rated tee combinations range from 4,936 to 6,765 yards.
From the championship setup, the course carries a 73.1 rating and 136 slope, while shorter sets progressively reduce the required length. The club also developed a substantial practice area rather than relying on a simple warm-up range: it includes a full grass driving range, two putting greens, a dedicated practice bunker and a chipping area.
The basic 1994 routing has remained the identity of The Quest rather than being replaced by a later redesign. Over time the course has been grouped with two other northern Michigan public courses, The Dream and The Nightmare, which the Quest website identifies as sister properties. Its clubhouse operation developed around public daily-fee golf, outings and leagues, with a pro shop, bar and grill and event seating for more than 100 guests.
The club's current reservation policy allows advance tee times without a general restriction on how far ahead guests may request them, while walking is permitted at any time.
The Quest gained regional recognition relatively early in its life. The club and Golf Association of Michigan record a four-star Golf Digest rating and a Detroit News designation among Michigan's Top 10 public courses. It also received the 2014 Readers' Choice award as the top golf club in Roscommon County.
Tournament use included the 1996 Golf Association of Michigan Junior Championship, four consecutive Michigan Section Senior PGA Championships from 1998 through 2001, and the Women's Atlas Trophy Cup Matches in 2000. These events helped establish the course beyond its immediate Houghton Lake recreational market.
The Quest remains an 18-hole public golf course operating from 119 Questview Drive in Houghton Lake. Its 2026 schedule separates spring/fall and summer pricing, with walking and cart rates available for both nine and 18 holes and twilight golf during the summer. The practice facility remains a grass driving range with two putting greens, a practice bunker and chipping area.
The clubhouse includes a pro shop and a bar and grill with indoor and patio seating overlooking the front nine and Houghton Lake. The club hosts leagues and outings, allows walking at any time, and continues to take online tee-time reservations through ForeUp.
