The Woods is the older of Mount Edgecombe Country Club's two 18-hole courses. Its origins date to 1935-36, when South African golfer Sid Brews was commissioned to design a parkland course for the Huletts company community on the sugar estate north of Durban. Originally known as Huletts Country Club and later Course One, it is now called The Woods.
Hugh Baiocchi carried out an extensive 1992 upgrade to USGA specifications as the surrounding estate transitioned from sugar land toward residential development. The current course plays to par 70. Mature trees frame much of the routing, while the club officially identifies holes 14 through 16 as its 'Amen Corner.'
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. Designed by Sid Brews, the course originally opened in 1936. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Senior Membership, Country Membership, Clubhouse, Restaurant, Bar, Bistro, Café, Terrace.
Golf at Mount Edgecombe developed from the social needs of a sugar-estate community. In the 1930s Huletts sought a recreational facility for employees and residents who otherwise faced a lengthy journey into Durban to play. Sid Brews was commissioned in 1935-36 to design the parkland course that became Huletts Country Club.
The late 1980s brought major disruption, including severe flooding in 1987 and a clubhouse fire in 1988. As surrounding cane fields were converted into a residential golf estate, Hugh Baiocchi extensively upgraded Course One in 1992 to USGA specifications. The layout was subsequently branded The Woods.
The Woods remains the older of Mount Edgecombe Country Club's two courses, paired with The Lakes and retaining its mature parkland character.
