The club's own historical material traces organised golf in Villa Grove to the late 1920s, including an early three-hole course at Shafer's Woods and subsequent play on Henson property. External course records commonly give 1935 as the opening year of the present course, while the current club presents itself as established in 1947. The facility operates as a private club with members and guests rather than an unrestricted public daily-fee course.

The club's history preserves newspaper accounts of organised golf in Villa Grove dating to August 1927, when approximately twenty local business and professional men formed a club and began building a three-hole course on George Shafer's farm north of town. By January 1928 another course project was being organised on Henson property south of old Villa Grove, using rolling ground, the Embarrass River, a drainage ditch, raised greens and sand traps.
Later records place the present golf course in operation by the mid-1930s, while today's organisation identifies itself as established in 1947. The course remained a compact nine-hole club rather than expanding to a second nine.
Tri-City Country Club operates a nine-hole private facility with a clubhouse and regular club tournaments. Modern rating data lists a 2,710-yard par-34 men's course.
