Origins

The Emerald Course was created during Wailea's major golf redevelopment in the early 1990s. Robert Trent Jones Jr designed both the Emerald and neighboring Gold courses, which opened in 1994.

Design Philosophy

Jones deliberately differentiated Emerald from the tougher Gold Course. He used wider fairways, gentler and more aesthetic bunkering, fewer forced carries and routing that generally plays level or downhill from the tee. Jones has said women golfers were specifically considered during the design process, with Amy Alcott consulted on concepts.

Recognition

Soon after opening, Emerald was named among Golf Magazine's top new courses and has subsequently appeared in Hawaii course rankings and women-friendly course selections.

Today

Emerald remains one of three Wailea Golf Club courses and is open to public tee-time play.
