Waitikiri Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-71 parkland course in Burwood, on the eastern edge of Christchurch, New Zealand. Formed in 1937 and designed by Ray Blank, the layout is known for its heavy use of doglegged holes — Blank himself considered a well-placed dogleg the golfer's best friend or worst enemy, and the course carries more than a dozen of them across its 6,082 yards. Mature native and exotic trees line the fairways, with bunkering and subtle green contours adding to the test.
A pro shop and clubhouse serve golfers before and after their round.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 71, 6,082 yards. Designed by Ray Blank, the course originally opened in 1937. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Junior Membership.
The land beneath Waitikiri traces back to 1860, when John McLean purchased it from the New Zealand Land Company. It wasn't until April 20, 1937, that a group of Canterbury golfers led by A.R. 'Ray' Blank formed Waitikiri Links Ltd to acquire the property and establish the club — alongside the neighbouring Bottle Lake Golf Club on the same landholding.
Blank, a school headmaster and Canterbury county councillor, designed the course himself, building in more doglegged holes than almost any course in the country. He saw the dogleg as the ultimate test of a golfer's judgement — reward the bold line, punish the greedy one.
Ownership of the course changed hands slowly over more than half a century. From 1937 to 1991, the club gradually bought out Waitikiri Links Ltd's shareholders, eventually reaching full freehold ownership when the shareholders voted to liquidate the company in 1991. A new clubhouse and pro shop followed in 1999, and holes 4 and 5 were redeveloped in 2005, funded by land sales.
Recent work has focused on the course's underlying condition rather than its layout: tree root removal and fairway restoration in 2022–2023, with drainage improvements to the 18th fairway planned for the following season.
