Golf arrived at Warrenpoint during the first major period of club formation in Ireland. The club was founded in 1893 and appears in the Golfing Annual of 1894-95, which recorded Major Hall as president, Colonel Cattell as captain and a membership of 75. Its original course contained nine holes.
The present course reflects later design work by Pat Ruddy and Tom Craddock. Their involvement shaped an established inland site rather than creating a new course from untouched ground.
The original nine-hole course was extended to 18 holes in 1920. Later redesign work by Ruddy and Craddock produced the parkland configuration played today.
