Woods Fort Golf Course is an 18-hole public course in Troy, Missouri, designed by Jerry Loomis and opened in 1994. Built across rolling Lincoln County hills, the layout features generous, relatively wide fairways and average-to-large greens with plenty of undulation, with water hazards coming into play on four holes.
The course plays to a par of 72 across three tees, from 4,889 yards at the forward markers to 6,404 yards from the Champions tips (course rating 71.8, slope 129). Its signature hole is the drivable par-4 17th, a 298-yard risk-reward test that asks players to carry roughly 270 yards over a lake fronted by stacked boulders to reach the green in one.

Long before there was a golf course, the ground near Troy carried a name earned in the War of 1812. Around 1812, pioneer Zadock Woods built a stockade next to a natural spring in what's now Lincoln County, one of a chain of forts — alongside Howard, Stout, Clark, and Cap au Gris — raised by settlers and Nathan Boone's Rangers to guard against Sac and Fox raids. Woods' Fort was the largest of them, enclosing cabins, a tavern, and a church, and for a time it served as headquarters for Lieutenant Zachary Taylor, the future 12th president. The town that grew up around the fort was platted in 1819 and became Troy.
More than 170 years later, in 1994, Missouri architect Jerry Loomis routed an 18-hole public course across the rolling hills outside town and took the fort's name for it. Loomis's design work was limited mostly to the region — his only other known credit is Tanglewood Golf Course in nearby Fulton — and at Woods Fort he built a course that plays across uneven, hilly terrain with water brought into play on four holes, closing with a short, drivable par four that carries roughly 270 yards over a boulder-lined lake.
Woods Fort has spent more than three decades as one of the primary public courses serving Troy and the greater St. Louis area, marketed for years around an affordable season-pass program. In 2025 and 2026 the ownership group, Walters Golf Management, carried out a 'Grand Re-Opening' of the property: an expanded outdoor dining deck, three Foresight Falcon indoor golf simulator bays, a renovated pro shop and bar, and a new GPS-equipped cart fleet, all added without altering Loomis's original routing.
Woods Fort is now one of six courses in the Walters Golf Management portfolio, alongside Gateway National Golf Links, Far Oaks Golf Club, Stonewolf Golf Club, Innsbrook Golf Course, and Heritage at Hawk Ridge, with season-pass holders granted reciprocal access across the group.
The club now functions as both a golf course and a year-round events venue, hosting weddings and gatherings in its Horizon Room and barn-style venue alongside its 18 holes, and offering indoor simulator golf through the winter months. On the course itself, the closing stretch remains the draw: a drivable par four guarded by water and stacked boulders, still the hole golfers talk about after a round at Woods Fort.
