Origins

York Golf Club was founded in 1890 and first played on the Knavesmire, now associated with York Racecourse. In 1904 the club moved to Lords Moor Farm at Strensall. Five-time Open champion J.

H. Taylor was invited to design the new course.

Did You Know?
The club's professional Ted Cheal continued competing after a First World War rifle wound left him unable to grip a club conventionally, using an elastic band to help secure his hand.

Design Philosophy

The early Strensall property was comparatively open, with farm ditches, ponds, hedges and a limited number of mature trees providing natural hazards. Taylor added more than 150 bunkers. Birch planting in the 1920s and 1930s gradually gave greater definition to the holes without erasing the heathland character.

Development

The course was leased from the military for many years, with discounted access for officers. In 1997 the Ministry of Defence sold the property to York Golf Club. The club has since invested in the course, driving range and practice facilities.

Today

York remains a members' club but welcomes visitors during specified weekday and Sunday periods and maintains a broad set of practice and clubhouse facilities.
