Alpine Country Club is a private 18-hole golf club on 196 acres in Demarest, New Jersey. W. Tillinghast for a group of civic leaders known as the Forty Millionaires.
Its original name combined Alpine, Demarest and Cresskill, the three communities connected to the property. The Jersey Palisades site presented unusually difficult construction conditions, with rock formations requiring blasting during development. The club was sold to its membership in 1960 and renamed Alpine Country Club.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,895 yards. Designed by A.W. Tillinghast, the course originally opened in 1928. It is a private members' club. On-site facilities include Pro Shop, Golf Lessons, Golf Simulator, Locker Rooms, Restaurant, Bar, Fitness Facility, Tennis Courts, and 1 more.
A group of civic leaders known as the Forty Millionaires commissioned A.W. Tillinghast in 1928 to design and build a golf course on the western slope of the Jersey Palisades. The resulting course was named Aldecress after the three communities connected to the property: Alpine, Demarest and Cresskill.
The rugged Palisades property presented significant construction challenges. The club records that rock formations had to be blasted to shape the course, making the project one of the more difficult sites Tillinghast worked on.
The course and club were sold to the membership in 1960 and renamed Alpine Country Club. In 2005, the club began a long-range program intended to restore the design and style of Tillinghast's original work while improving turf and preserving the surrounding landscape. The Golfhouse was expanded during that period, and the main clubhouse was rebuilt in 2007.
Golf Digest identifies Alpine as an A.W. Tillinghast design and includes it in its New Jersey course database.
Alpine remains a private country club on 196 acres, combining the historic Tillinghast course with golf instruction, dining, fitness, tennis and extensive clubhouse facilities.
