Golf Course Architect
Lee Schmidt (born September 14, 1947, in Carmel, Indiana) graduated from Purdue University in 1970 with a degree in Agronomy. He began his golf architecture career working under Pete Dye for seven years, contributing to projects like the Kiawah Island Ocean Course and Casa de Campo, before serving as vice president at Landmark Land Company and then as a senior design associate at Nicklaus Design.
In 1997, he co-founded Schmidt‑Curley Design with Brian Curley, designing or renovating courses including Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon; the firm became highly influential in Asian golf course development. Schmidt has served in leadership roles in the American Society of Golf Course Architects and was named Golf Magazine’s “Architect of the Year” in 2011.
In 2019, he retired from Schmidt‑Curley to launch Schmidt Golf Design in Naples, Florida.
