Golf Course Architect
Wayne E. Stiles (1884–1953) was a self‑taught Boston landscape designer turned golf architect.
He began as a junior partner at Brett & Hall before launching his own firm in 1915 and designing his first nine‑hole course at Nashua Country Club in 1916. In 1924, he formed a design partnership with Cornell‑trained John Van Kleek, with offices in Boston, New York, and St.
Petersburg, Florida. Together they expanded into golf‑oriented subdivisions and crafted notable works, including the Rutland Country Club expansion (1927‑28).
When the Depression hit, the partnership dissolved, and Stiles continued independently, completing many East Coast projects and becoming a founding member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects in 1947.
