Golf Course Architect
William F. Gordon (1893–1973) was an American golf course architect who brought extensive hands‑on experience in construction and seed industry operations before embarking on design.
S. Navy during World War I, he began as a seed salesman supplying firms like Donald Ross and Devereux Emmet.
He then spent 18 years with the esteemed Toomey & Flynn firm, contributing to work on celebrated courses such as Shinnecock Hills and Merion before launching his own practice in 1950. Around that time his son David W.
Gordon joined the business, forming a prolific father‑son partnership. William was a founding member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects and served as its president in 1953–1954 and again in 1967–1968.
His firm’s work, including Indian Valley Country Club in Telford, PA, reflects a restrained, natural style grounded in construction and routings sensitive to landform. He passed away in 1973.
