Ruggles Golf Course is an 18-hole championship course on Aberdeen Proving Ground, the U.S. Army installation in Harford County, Maryland. The original 9 holes were laid out by William Gordon in the 1950s, expanded to a full 18-hole championship layout by Edmund Ault, and later renovated by Dan Schlegel — giving the course a design lineage spanning three distinct eras of American golf architecture.
The course plays to a par of 72 across five tee complexes, from 5,071 yards at the forward Red tees up to a demanding 7,230 yards from the Championship Black tees (course rating 74.5, slope 131) — genuine championship length that few military courses can match. Additional tee options at Gold (5,900), White (6,330) and Blue (6,790) give golfers of every ability a suitable test on the same layout.

Few golf courses trace their roots to an active weapons-testing ground, but Ruggles Golf Course has called Aberdeen Proving Ground home since the 1950s. William F. Gordon, a Philadelphia-based architect who had spent eighteen years with the firm behind Shinnecock Hills and Merion before starting his own practice, laid out the original nine holes on the Army installation grounds in Harford County, Maryland.
What began as a modest nine-hole layout for soldiers stationed at the base would, within a generation, grow into a full championship test open well beyond the gates of the base itself.
Washington, D.C. architect Edmund Ault took on the expansion to a full eighteen holes, extending Gordon's original routing into the layout that exists largely intact today. Ault built his reputation on practical, well-engineered courses — large greens, natural drainage, and minimal but strategic bunkering aimed at everyday playability rather than pure difficulty — and Ruggles reflects that approach at championship scale, stretching to 7,230 yards from the back tees.
Dan Schlegel later refined the layout further, work the club itself credits with helping make Ruggles "a traditional masterpiece."
The course grew from Gordon's original nine to Ault's full eighteen, then through Schlegel's later renovation, before the clubhouse itself caught up with the course: the Sutherland Clubhouse and surrounding grounds were renovated in 2009, adding a casual dining room and patio overlooking the course.
Though it sits on U.S. Army land, Ruggles sits just outside the installation's secure gate on Route 715 — meaning the course never required the same access restrictions as the base itself, and could grow into a course played well beyond active-duty personnel.
