Origins

Golf was established at Albert Park in the late 19th century. Albert Park Women's Golf Club records the original Albert Park Golf Club establishing a nine-hole course in 1897, although historical research also documents golf being played on the parkland by Melbourne golfers earlier in the 1890s.

Did You Know?
The course became public in 1947 after the Victorian Government declined to renew the private Albert Park Golf Club lease.

Development

The private club extended the course from nine to 18 holes in 1931. In 1947 the Victorian Government determined that the golf course should become public and did not renew the private club's lease. The former club moved to Keysborough, while golf continued at Albert Park as a public facility.

Later park redevelopment and Grand Prix infrastructure resulted in further changes to the surrounding precinct and parts of the course.

Today

Albert Park is now a fully public 18-hole golf course operated within the Albert Park recreational precinct, alongside lessons, practice facilities and mini golf.
